Piazza Santa Maria Novella
Step into the wide Piazza Santa Maria Novella, facing a church front striped in white and green marble. Look for the two tall obelisks in the square, then study the church's facade carefully. Some of its decorations are actually scientific instruments.
Palazzo Antinori Wine Window
Head to Piazza degli Antinori, at the top of Via de' Tornabuoni, where a stately stone palace has belonged to the same family for more than 500 years. Walk around the corner of the palace and look low on the wall for a tiny, arched opening with a little door.
Piazza della Repubblica
Head to Piazza della Repubblica, a grand square framed by historic cafés and a huge triumphal arch. People have gathered on this spot for 2,000 years. Read the inscription on top of the arch, and find the tall column standing in the square.
Palazzo Strozzi
Find Palazzo Strozzi, a massive stone palace on Via de' Tornabuoni. It was built by a banker who wanted to outdo the Medici. Walk along the outside and look closely at the iron fittings fixed to its walls and corners.
Column of Justice
In Piazza Santa Trinita, a tall column rises above the traffic with a statue at the very top. This column traveled all the way from an ancient bath complex in Rome. Look up at the statue, then check out the base. Stay on the sidewalk, as cars pass all around it.
Puente Santa Trinita
Walk out onto the Ponte Santa Trinita, often called the most elegant bridge in Florence, with a postcard view of the Ponte Vecchio. At each corner stands a white marble statue. Look over the side at the curve of the arches, then study the four statues.
Palazzo Rucellai
On Via della Vigna Nuova, find Palazzo Rucellai, a palace whose flat columns and neat grid of stone made it a Renaissance trendsetter. Across the small triangular square stands the family's open-air loggia. Study the palace from street level to the top floor.
Piazza Ognissanti
Head to Piazza Ognissanti, a quiet square that opens onto the Arno River. In the middle, a muscular bronze hero wrestles a fierce beast. Behind him stands the church of Ognissanti, meaning All Saints. Take in the statue and the view along the river.
