Robinson Dry Dock
Peer over the edge and you're looking into a working piece of history. Ships float in, the water is pumped out, and the vessel settles onto blocks so crews can clean and inspect its hull. The walls were built the old-fashioned way, one stone at a time, and have outlasted generations of ships. Stay behind the barriers and watch for activity.
Nobel Square
Four bronze figures stand shoulder to shoulder here, each a little taller than life, honouring the South Africans who won the Nobel Peace Prize. Slow down, read the words set into the ground at their feet and look for a fifth sculpture celebrating the women and children who carried the struggle for peace. This is a spot for reflection, not rushing.
Contours of the Cape Sign
Eight giant letters, one big hello! This sign does more than spell the city's name: each letter carries the contours of a real peak from around the Cape, from fishing-village mountains to winelands ranges. Local artists added their own stories to the letters, so circle round, compare the shapes with the skyline and find your favourite.
Clock Tower Swing Bridge
This walkway does something most bridges never dare: it swivels out of the way. When a vessel needs to slip between the basin and the open sea, the whole span pivots aside, then swings back for walkers. Before it, folks paid a penny to be rowed across. Check out how the deck keeps two-way foot traffic flowing smoothly.
La Torre dell'Orologio
Painted a bold red and topped with a clock that has kept time for generations, this little Gothic tower was once the Port Captain's office. From up high he watched every ship come and go, scanning the harbour from a lookout room famous for its many reflections. Study the windows and trim: Victorian builders loved a dramatic detail.
Zeitz MOCAA Grain Silo
Ships once loaded the harvest from this towering concrete giant, packed with dozens of tall tubes. Today it holds contemporary African art below and a hotel above, and its upper windows look like they've been inflated! Stand back far enough to take in the whole height and notice how the old industrial bones still show through.
