De Waag
Weigh to go! This chunky, castle-like building stands in the middle of the Nieuwmarkt, so admire it from the square. It began life in the 1400s as the Sint Antoniespoort, a gate in the city walls, and became a weigh house in 1617. Guilds met upstairs, including the surgeons, who held anatomy lessons here.
He Hua Temple
Lotus be calm! This is an active Buddhist temple, so enjoy its colorful gateway from the Zeedijk and keep your voices low. Built by the Fo Guang Shan order and opened in 2000, He Hua, meaning lotus flower, brings traditional Chinese temple style right into Amsterdam's small Chinatown.
Trippenhuis
Blast from the past! This palace is home to the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, so admire it from across the canal. Arms dealers Louys and Hendrick Trip built it in 1660-1662 as two homes behind one grand front, and they made sure everyone knew where their money came from.
Kleine Trippenhuis
Squeeze play! Find the skinny white house across the canal from the Trippenhuis and admire it from the street, as it's a private building. Legend says the Trips' coachman wished for a house as wide as his master's front door, and got exactly that. Historians doubt the tale, but the house is only about 2.4 meters wide.
Zuiderkerk
Holy tower power! The Zuiderkerk now hosts events and services, so enjoy it from the Zuiderkerkhof square. Hendrick de Keyser designed it as Amsterdam's first church built for Protestant worship; it opened in 1611. Rembrandt's son Titus was baptized here in 1641, and De Keyser himself is buried inside.
Rembrandt House
Brush with greatness! Rembrandt van Rijn lived and worked in this house, now a museum, so admire its old brick front from the Jodenbreestraat. He bought it in 1639 at the height of his fame, painted The Night Watch while living here, and had to leave in 1658 after going bankrupt.
Huis De Pinto
Pinto-resque! Huis De Pinto is now a public library and community space, so enjoy its white facade from the street. VOC director Jan Jansz. Carel built the house around 1606, and banker Isaac de Pinto bought it in 1651. In the 1970s locals saved it from being demolished for a new road.
