Stops on this hunt
Charleston Gaillard Center
Charleston's big stage for symphony, ballet and Broadway shows started life as the Gaillard Municipal Auditorium in 1968. The old hall was replaced by this grand white building, which opened in 2015 with a concert by Yo-Yo Ma. It's also a home base for Spoleto Festival USA, born in Charleston in 1977.
Theodora Park
This hidden garden opened in 2015, and it's one of the calmest spots downtown. It's named after Theodora, the mother of the man who dreamed it up. Look for the long pool covered in handmade tiles and a gate made by Charleston's most famous blacksmith.
Middleton-Pinckney House
Frances Motte Middleton started this elegant house in 1796. She finished it with her new husband, General Thomas Pinckney, after they married in 1797. Later, it was home to the city's water works company. Since 1988 it has been the headquarters of Spoleto Festival USA.
Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim
This congregation was founded in 1749, when Charleston had one of the largest Jewish communities in America. The first synagogue here burned in the great fire of 1838. This Greek Revival building replaced it in 1840. It's often called the birthplace of Reform Judaism in America.
St. Mary of the Annunciation
Right across Hasell Street stands the first Catholic parish in the Carolinas and Georgia. The land was bought in 1789. The first brick church burned in the fire of 1838, and this one opened in 1839. Its colorful stained glass windows were shipped all the way from Munich, Germany.
Colonel William Rhett House
Built in 1712, this is one of the oldest buildings in Charleston. Back then it was a plantation house outside the walled city. Its builder, Colonel William Rhett, is famous for one daring mission. In 1718, he sailed out and captured the pirate Stede Bonnet, known as the 'Gentleman Pirate.'
Bennett Rice Mill Facade
Rice once made Charleston rich, and this was one of the biggest rice mills in the country. It opened in 1845. In 1960, Hurricane Donna nearly flattened it, leaving just the west wall standing. That lonely wall was carefully repaired and stabilized in 2025. View it from the street.
