Colonial Lake
In 1768, this land was set aside as a public common for everyone in Charleston. Over time it became a tidal pond, long nicknamed 'The Pond.' In 1881 it was renamed Colonial Lake, and by 1885 it had the walled edges and wide walkways you see today. Locals love to jog and stroll around it.
Bee's Row
This elegant row of townhouses was built around 1853 by Sarah Smith. The houses share walls with each other, so from the street they look like one long building. The name came later, from William C. Bee and Co., which moved in during the Civil War. They're private homes, so admire them from the sidewalk.
Avery Research Center
This red brick building was the Avery Normal Institute, a school for Black students founded in 1865 by the American Missionary Association. The building opened in 1868 and trained generations of teachers and leaders. Today it's the Avery Research Center for African American History and Culture.
Old Marine Hospital
Robert Mills, the architect of the Washington Monument, designed this Gothic-style hospital for sick sailors in the early 1830s. From 1895 to 1939, it was home to the Jenkins Orphanage, which took in Black children and started a famous band to raise money.
