La Tortuga Monument
This side of the island faces the open Caribbean, where the waves hit harder and the horizon feels endless. Sea turtles are part of island life here, and this monument puts them in plain sight. Read its short line about the species and think about why a town built on fishing would choose to celebrate a creature that needs protecting.
Parque Principal
This square is the island's living room. Daytime is easygoing, but evenings bring families, food stands, music and pickup games on the court, and big holidays pack it shoulder to shoulder. Civic life and faith share the edges here: the town hall on one side, the parish church on another, each keeping an eye on the fun in the middle.
The Strolling Street
Cars are out and strollers are in on the island's main dining street. Tables spill onto the pavement, shop fronts compete with color, and after dark the whole lane hums with music and chatter. The street carries the name of the priest whose call to arms sparked Mexico's fight for independence, so check the signs and give him a nod.
Válvula Diver Tribute
Fishing families here grew up reading the sea, and one local diver read it better than almost anyone. This roadside plaque honors a diver whose curiosity led him into an underwater cave where sharks seemed to doze instead of hunt. Read the tribute closely; it shares his real name, his famous nickname, and the find that made him a legend.
Fish Gate at Playa Centro
Two giant fish leap together to form an arch here, framing the way onto a calm little beach right beside the ferry traffic. These waters are famous among anglers for big billfish, so the choice of sculpture is no accident. Across the street stands a lighthouse guarding the north tip, a beauty you admire strictly from the outside.
Fisherman's Roundabout
Long before ferries and beach clubs, this island ran on boats, nets and early mornings. The figure in the middle of this roundabout stands for the fishermen who headed out to sea to earn a living, whatever the weather. Read the inscription from the sidewalk and notice whose memory it carries. Stay clear of the cars circling the statue.
Playa Norte
This is the beach that puts the island on postcards. Pale, soft sand meets water so calm and shallow that people wander far from shore and still feel safe. Look past the sunbathers toward a small island linked by a wooden bridge, crowned with a brightly painted building. Shoes off is optional, but strongly encouraged here.
