Stops on this hunt
Calle Larios
This pedestrian street was built as a showpiece, lined with matching buildings whose designer took cues from the skyscraper city of the American Midwest. Notice how the facades meet the side streets, and glance down too: the stone underfoot replaced something much softer after a flood. Every big festival here gets its moment, even a red carpet.
Fuente de Génova, Plaza de la Constitución
Long before it took its current name, this square was the crossroads where four streets met and the city did its business. Today the star is a white marble fountain crowded with sea gods, dolphins and some very strange mermaids. Circle it slowly: nobody can prove where it was carved, but its carvers clearly loved the sea.
La Manquita's Missing Tower
Look up at the cathedral and something feels lopsided. One bell tower soars, while its twin stops short, as if the builders went home early. Locals have a fond nickname for the building because of it, and a popular legend tells a surprising story about where the money for that missing tower ended up. Keep voices low near the doors.
Palacio de Buenavista
Behind these thick stone walls stands a Renaissance palace built by a soldier who helped take the city, on ground with a long and layered past. Spot the tower that gives it a hint of Granada. Today the building guards a very famous local boy's art, so check the banners and signs outside to see whose genius lives here now.
Alcazaba Walls
Moorish rulers crowned this hill with a fortress, and its walls still climb the slope like a stone staircase. Its builders were thrifty and reused stone they found close at hand. Trace the walls upward toward the castle at the summit and picture how soldiers once moved safely between the two strongholds.
Picasso on the Bench
A world-famous painter came into the world in a corner house on this square, and he has come back to stay, sort of. Find him in bronze, settled on a stone bench and busy capturing the scene around him. There is space beside him, so take a seat and see what he might be sketching: the trees, the pigeons or maybe you.
Iglesia de Santiago Tower
This is the city's oldest church, raised on the site of a mosque, and its square tower began life standing alone like a minaret. Study the tower's surface from the street: one panel hides an interlocking pattern from Moorish times. A young Picasso was carried here as a baby, so this quiet spot played a part in an artist's story.
