Stops on this hunt
Arches of Jardin Centenario
Arch-itecture alert! Keep your feet on the cobbles and admire this gateway from the plaza side. Built in the 1500s as the entrance to the atrium of the Franciscan convent of San Juan Bautista, these carved stone arches are the oldest door in town that never needs a key.
Coyote Fountain
Howl-o there! The pack is waiting right in the middle of the garden, so keep to the paths around the basin. Coyoacan means 'place of coyotes' in Nahuatl, and this bronze duo has been the neighborhood's mascot since 1967.
Parish of San Juan Bautista
Bells and whistles of history! Services are held here, so take in the facade quietly from the atrium. Begun around 1522 by friars on land granted by Hernan Cortes, this is one of the three oldest parish churches in Mexico City.
Coyoacan Kiosk
Kiosk-ing good time! Enjoy this one from the plaza paving and leave the bandstand floor to the performers. This plaza is Coyoacan's main square, and its kiosk was a centennial gift from President Porfirio Diaz in 1910.
Cafe El Jarocho
Brew-tiful corner! Order if you like, but this famous counter has no dining room anyway: the sidewalk is the cafe. Since 1953 Coyoacan has lined up here for cheap, strong coffee, and the queue is part of the charm.
Mercado de Coyoacan
Market value guaranteed! Solve these from the sidewalk by the entrances; tostadas are optional. This public market opened in 1956 on land once used for stables and corrals, and it still feeds the neighborhood every day.
Casa de Cortes
Town hall of fame! This is a working borough office, so admire the portico from the plaza side. The name is a myth: Cortes never lived here. The building dates from the 1750s and has been Coyoacan's seat of government since the 1850s.
