Place des Vosges
Welcome to the oldest planned square in Paris. King Henri IV ordered it built, and it opened in 1612 as the Place Royale. Matching red-brick houses with steep blue slate roofs wrap around a leafy garden, and you can stroll under the arcades all the way around.
Wall of Philippe Auguste
Peek over the fence on Rue des Jardins-Saint-Paul at a real chunk of medieval Paris. King Philippe Auguste ringed the city with walls before heading off on Crusade, and this is the longest stretch still standing. The Right Bank section went up between 1190 and 1209.
Medieval Houses of Rue François-Miron
These two half-timbered houses at Nos. 11 and 13 are some of the oldest homes in Paris, dating back to at least the early 1500s. Medieval Paris was packed with wooden houses like these, until fire rules forced most of them to be plastered over or torn down.
Hôtel de Sully
Slip through the gate at 62 Rue Saint-Antoine into the courtyard of one of the grandest mansions in the Marais, built between 1624 and 1630. The courtyard and garden are free to wander during the day, and a secret-feeling passage at the back leads to the Place des Vosges.
Hôtel de Sens
With its pointy turrets and Gothic windows, this mansion looks like a fairy-tale castle. It's one of the few medieval mansions left in Paris, built between 1475 and 1519 as the city home of the archbishops of Sens. Check the front wall for a souvenir from a street battle.
Hôtel de Beauvais
This elegant mansion was built between 1657 and 1660 for Catherine Bellier, wife of Pierre de Beauvais and a favorite of Queen Anne of Austria. In 1660, the queen watched young Louis XIV and his new bride parade into Paris from its balcony. Admire the grand street front and take a close look at its entrance.
