Stops on this hunt
Au Lapin Agile
This little pink house is one of the most famous cabarets in Paris. Picasso, Modigliani and plenty of other broke artists came here to drink, sing and argue about art. Take a peek across the street too, behind the fence.
Le Passe-Muraille
Look closely around this little square. In a famous short story by Marcel Aymé, a shy office worker named Dutilleul discovers he can walk through walls. Then one day his power fails, and he's stuck forever. This sculpture catches him halfway through.
Moulin Radet
Montmartre was once covered in windmills grinding grain into flour. The Moulin Radet, built in 1717, now perches above a restaurant at the corner of Rue Lepic and Rue Girardon. It's one of only two windmills left on the hill.
Bateau-Lavoir
On the Place Émile-Goudeau, behind the shopfront at No. 13, stood the Bateau-Lavoir, a creaky old building full of cheap studios. Pablo Picasso lived and worked here, and in 1907 he painted Les Demoiselles d'Avignon, the picture that helped launch Cubism.
Saint-Jean de Montmartre
This red church on the Place des Abbesses was a rebel when it was finished in 1904: the first church in France built with a daring new material. Architect Anatole de Baudot then dressed it up with colorful ceramics. Check out the entrance arches.
Abbesses Métro Entrance
On the Place des Abbesses stands one of the most famous Métro entrances in the world. The star of French Art Nouveau gave it curvy green ironwork and a glass roof like a dragonfly's wings. Fun twist: this entrance has a secret past.
Place du Tertre
Welcome to the heart of old Montmartre, once a village outside Paris. For more than 100 years, it's been one of the liveliest squares in Paris. Legend says hungry Russian soldiers who ate here in 1814 gave the world a new word for a small restaurant.
Sacré-Cœur Basilica
Crowning the top of Montmartre, the Sacré-Cœur was built between 1875 and 1914 and consecrated in 1919. Stand in front of the main entrance and look up at the riders above the doors, then turn around for one of the best views in Paris.
