Campo San Zaccaria
Just steps from the busy waterfront, slip into the quiet Campo San Zaccaria. The church's tall white front mixes two architectural styles stacked one on top of the other, and the remains of several doges lie beneath it. Take in the whole facade from the campo.
Monument to Victor Emmanuel II
On the busy Riva degli Schiavoni waterfront, a bronze king on horseback rises above the crowds. The monument celebrates the moment Venice joined the new Kingdom of Italy. Walk all the way around it and look closely at the lions and the figures on the base.
Santa Maria della Pietà
On the Riva degli Schiavoni, find the elegant white church of Santa Maria della Pietà. For decades, one of the most famous composers of all time taught music to the orphaned girls who lived here, and their concerts drew visitors from across Europe. Look up at the church front.
Arsenale Gate
Follow the canal to the grand stone gateway of the Arsenale, Venice's mighty shipyard. For centuries, it was one of the biggest workplaces in the world. Big stone lions stand guard outside the gate, and some came from very far away. Look closely at each lion.
Fondamenta della Tana
Walk along the Fondamenta della Tana, beside a brick wall that seems to go on forever. Behind it stands the Corderie, the Arsenale's rope factory, where cables and ropes for the fleet were twisted by hand. Try walking its length and you'll see why it had to be so long.
Via Garibaldi
Stroll down Via Garibaldi, the widest street in Venice and a favorite gathering spot for locals. Believe it or not, boats once floated where you're walking. Near the western end of the street, look for a plaque honoring a father and son who sailed off to explore new lands.
Garibaldi Monument
At the end of Via Garibaldi, step into the shady gardens and find the monument to Giuseppe Garibaldi, the hero of Italy's unification. Look carefully at who stands below him on the rocks. Local legend says one of them has a ghostly story.
San Pietro di Castello
Cross a bridge onto the little island of San Pietro di Castello, at the far eastern edge of Venice. This quiet, grassy campo was once the religious heart of the city. For centuries, the church here, not St Mark's, was the cathedral of Venice. Look up at its bell tower.
