Fountain-Lamppost by the Giralda
Horse-drawn carriages clip past while the cathedral's bell tower soars overhead, but the real oddball sits in the middle of the square: a centerpiece that does two jobs at once. Circle it slowly and check out the stone faces spitting water, then compare the two very different buildings facing each other across the square.
The Lion Gate
A blood-red wall and a crowned lion guard the royal palace entrance here. The lion stands tall on his tiles with something gripped in each paw and a short Latin motto beneath his feet. Read it carefully: it is a promise about being ready, whatever comes. You can meet him free from the square, and no ticket is needed for this visit.
The Water Alley
This narrow lane's watery name hides a clever secret built right into its old stonework. Look for the fountain tucked into the masonry, the greenery climbing over the ironwork overhead and the plaques on the house fronts honoring famous names. Then puzzle out where all that water was headed. Keep voices low, since people live along here.
The Legendary Charmer
Round raised planters double as benches in this square, and in the middle stands a bronze gentleman in old-fashioned finery. He is literature's most notorious charmer, and he has never been shy about his reputation. Study his pedestal closely, then decide as a team whether you would ever trust him with your secrets.
The Iron Cross and the Painter's Stone
A church once stood here, and one of Sevilla's greatest painters was buried inside it. The church is gone, but a stone marker on a nearby façade still remembers him. In the center, an elaborate wrought-iron cross with lanterns rises among the greenery. Look closely: creatures curl around it, and tiny figures hold up the lights.
House of the Venerable Priests
This grand Baroque building was a retirement home with a purpose, built for people who had spent their lives serving others. Study the crisp contrast between its walls and trim, then find the arched porch at the base of the church front. Today it hosts exhibitions and concerts, yet its exterior tells the story.
The Legend in the Tiles
Locals have long called this quiet lane by a darker nickname, and the reason is set in tile on one of its houses. The story involves a young woman, a secret love, her father's fate and a request in her will that still haunts the street. Find the tiles and read the legend for yourselves, and treat this sad story with care.
Doña Elvira's Stage
Leafy trees, tiled benches and a small fountain make this little square feel like a stage set, and that is fitting. Theater has deep roots here, and legend links the spot to a family from Spain's most famous tale of seduction. Find the ceramic sign that tells the tradition, then claim a bench and enjoy the scene for a minute.
