Stops on this hunt
Puente de Isabel II (Triana Bridge)
Locals call this iron beauty the true front door to the west bank. Long before it, people crossed the river on a line of boats chained together. Its designers copied a twin that once spanned the Seine in Paris, since demolished, leaving this one as the survivor. Look down and study the ironwork tucked between the arches and the road.
Capilla del Carmen (Capillita del Carmen)
Small but unforgettable, this brick chapel guards the end of the bridge like a tiled sentry. Its glazed dome carries the shield of the Carmelite order, and a tiny glass-fronted temple shelters two patron saints cradling a model of the Giralda. Locals nicknamed the slim tower the lighter. Keep voices low and treat it as the place of worship it is.
Callejón de la Inquisición (Castillo de San Jorge)
This narrow passage once formed part of a riverside castle that became the headquarters of the Inquisition, and prisoners were led along it to face judgment. Walk it quietly. Today it links the street to the riverside promenade, and a tile on its wall records a different danger: just how high the river once rose. Pause here a moment.
Cerámica Santa Ana and Centro Cerámica Triana
For generations this corner smelled of wet clay and wood smoke. Potters dug their clay close to home, shaped it by hand and fired it in kilns, and several of those kilns still stand in their original spots behind these walls. The shopfront here wears a famous coat of painted advertising tiles. Study the colors of the barrio's signature craft.
Plaza del Altozano: Triana al Arte Flamenco
This lively square is the traditional gateway from the bridge, and two bronze tributes hold court here. One honors flamenco's three arts of song, dance and touch, with a female figure and a tool borrowed from the blacksmith's forge, a nod to songs once sung to a hammer's beat. Nearby stands a legendary local bullfighter, cast in bronze.
Iglesia de Santa Ana (Real Parroquia de Santa Ana)
Nicknamed the cathedral of the west bank, this is the oldest parish church in the city, ordered built by a king soon after the Christian conquest. Scan the roofline for a detail that hints it once doubled as a stronghold, then find the tower's crown glazed in ceramics. Worship happens here every day, so keep voices down and stay respectful.
Calle Betis Riverfront and Casa de las Columnas
This riverside street borrows its name from the Roman name for the river, and it has long had to stand guard against the river's floods. Narrow houses, each painted a different color, face one of the best skyline views in the city. Find the grand house with sturdy columns, built where a sailors' hospital once stood, then scan the far bank.
Capilla de los Marineros
Tucked along a narrow street just back from the river, this chapel is home to one of the city's most revered Holy Week images, a Virgin long cherished by local families. Its story has surprising twists: the building has lived several very different lives before returning to worship. Please visit quietly and respectfully.
