Stops on this hunt
Campo Santa Margherita
Step into Campo Santa Margherita, a long, lively square loved by students and locals. A small brick building stands all alone in the middle, and at one end, the stump of an old bell tower hides a curious carving. Explore the whole campo before you start.
Ponte dei Pugni
Find a small bridge over a canal near Campo San Barnaba. Its name means 'Bridge of Fists.' For centuries, rival gangs from opposite sides of Venice met here to battle it out, often ending up in the canal. Look closely at the stones on top of the bridge.
Campo San Barnaba
Next door, Campo San Barnaba is a pretty little square beside a canal, with a white church front and an old bell tower. Movie fans may recognize it: the church starred as a library in a famous adventure film. Look up at the very top of the bell tower.
Squero di San Trovaso
Along the Rio di San Trovaso, look across the canal for a cluster of wooden buildings with sloping roofs and boats pulled up on a ramp. This is one of the last places where gondolas are still built and repaired by hand. Watch from the opposite side of the canal.
Zattere Promenade
Stroll onto the Zattere, a long, sunny waterfront along the wide Giudecca Canal. Ships, vaporetti and water taxis glide past, and across the water stands a gleaming white church on Giudecca island. Find a spot by the water and take in the view.
Ponte dell'Accademia
Climb the Ponte dell'Accademia, one of the very few bridges that cross the Grand Canal. From the top, you'll get one of the most famous views in Venice, with a huge domed church at the mouth of the canal. Take your time at the top and look in every direction.
Santa Maria della Salute
Stand in the square in front of Santa Maria della Salute, the enormous domed church that guards the entrance to the Grand Canal. It was built to give thanks for the end of a deadly epidemic. Walk around the outside and look up at its domes and giant stone scrolls.
Punta della Dogana
Walk to the very tip of Dorsoduro, where the Grand Canal meets the Giudecca Canal. This triangular building was Venice's sea customs house, where arriving ships' cargo was checked. Look up at the top of its tower, then enjoy the view across to San Marco.
