Campo San Samuele
This little square on the Grand Canal hides two big stories. The grand white palace beside it was the last one built on the canal before the old Republic of Venice fell, and just off the square is the narrow lane where the city's most famous charmer, Giacomo Casanova, was born.
Tommaseo Statue, Campo Santo Stefano
Campo Santo Stefano is one of the biggest squares in Venice, and in the middle stands a writer who helped lead the city's fight for freedom in 1848. Venetians love him, but they also love to tease him. Walk all the way around his statue to find out why.
Campo San Maurizio
This small square is full of music today, but its walls also tell a story of war. Look for the white church that's now home to old musical instruments, then find the narrow building at the corner of the square covered in carved stone panels from the 1500s.
Teatro La Fenice
Welcome to one of the most famous opera houses in the world. Its name means 'the phoenix,' the mythical bird that rises from its own ashes, and the theater has lived up to that name more than once. Study its elegant front for clues.
Mozart's Bridge (Ponte dei Barcaroli)
Stand on this little bridge over a quiet canal and look for a plaque on the house beside it. In 1771, a teenage musical genius came to Venice for Carnival and stayed right here. He would go on to become one of the most famous composers who ever lived.
Daniele Manin Monument
In 1848, the people of Venice rose up against Austrian rule and declared their own republic. The lawyer who led them stands proudly in the middle of this square. Take a close look at the statue and at the very different building behind it.
Scala Contarini del Bovolo
Tucked away in a tiny courtyard, this round tower of arches winds up the side of an old palace. In the Venetian dialect, 'bovolo' is a word for something slow and curly. You can admire the whole staircase for free from the alley entrance and courtyard gate.
Campo Sant'Angelo
This airy square once had its own church, and its bell tower leaned so badly in the 1400s that an expert was called in to straighten it. Today the square is best known for its view of another tower. Look past the rooftops toward the church of Santo Stefano and you'll see why.
