Stops on this hunt
Hachikō Statue
Find Tokyo's most famous meeting spot: a bronze dog sitting patiently outside Shibuya Station. Hachikō waited here every day for his owner to come home from work, and he kept waiting long after his owner was gone. Today, half of Tokyo says 'meet me at Hachikō.'
Shibuya Scramble Crossing
Brace yourselves! At the Shibuya Scramble, every car stops at once and pedestrians flood the intersection from every direction, including diagonally. Find a safe spot on the sidewalk, watch a couple of light changes and then join the human tidal wave yourselves.
Moyai Statue
On the quieter south side of Shibuya Station stands another popular meeting spot, and it's a lot less fluffy than Hachikō. Look for a giant carved stone head with a long nose and a serious expression. Does it remind you of anywhere?
Shibuya 109
Find the silver cylinder tower standing at the fork where two busy streets split. Shibuya 109 has been a temple of teen fashion since 1979, and its name hides a clever numbers trick. Stand back at the corner and look up at the big '109' on the tower.
Shibuya Center Gai
Walk into Center Gai, Shibuya's busiest shopping street, which begins right by the Scramble Crossing. It's packed with arcades, fast-food stands, music shops and crowds of young people at almost any hour. Look for the street's name on the signs and lamp posts, then dive into the noise.
Miyashita Park
Look up! Miyashita Park isn't on the ground at all. It sits on the roof of a long, low building beside the train tracks, with lawns, sports courts and a skate park above the shops. Head up to the rooftop and see how Tokyo squeezes green space into a crowded city. The rooftop is open from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Shibuya Stream
Escape the crowds along the Shibuya River, where a walkway lined with trees and seating follows the water past a gleaming tower. Shibuya Stream opened in 2018, and the river beside it was given a makeover with a water feature that cascades down a wall. Find the walkway and follow the flow.
