Stops on this hunt
Tokyo Station Marunouchi Building
Stand on the plaza in front of Tokyo Station's west side and take in its long red-brick facade. Opened in 1914, this grand building looks more like a European palace than a train station. Step back far enough to see the whole thing, from one end to the other.
KITTE Marunouchi
Right across the plaza from Tokyo Station, a sleek white building hides a secret past. The lower floors of KITTE are the preserved front of the old Tokyo Central Post Office, built in 1931. Stand outside and spot where the old building ends and the new tower begins.
Marunouchi Naka-dori
Stroll Naka-dori, Marunouchi's stylish main street, where cobbled sidewalks and leafy trees run between gleaming office towers and designer boutiques. Look for the sculptures that pop up along the sidewalks as part of an open-air art gallery. Pick one and take a closer look.
Statue of Kusunoki Masashige
Find the huge bronze statue of a samurai on horseback at the southeast corner of the palace's outer garden. Kusunoki Masashige was a 14th-century warrior famous for his loyalty to the Emperor. Walk around the statue and study the details.
Nijūbashi Bridge
Head to the edge of the plaza in front of the palace for Tokyo's most famous postcard view: elegant bridges crossing the moat, with an old castle watchtower peeking out from the trees behind. Find the best spot along the railing and take it all in.
Kokyo Gaien Pine Lawns
Welcome to the Imperial Palace Outer Garden, a vast open space of gravel paths and lawns dotted with neatly sculpted pine trees. Right in the middle of Tokyo, it feels wonderfully calm. Stroll among the pines and admire how carefully each one has been shaped.
Gyōkō-dōri Avenue
Find the grand, extra-wide avenue that runs straight from Tokyo Station toward the Imperial Palace. Gyōkō-dōri is lined with ginkgo trees and has a wide central walkway made for strolling. Stand in the middle and look in both directions: the station at one end, the palace greenery at the other.
